I'd Like to Thank God, Part One
written by Steve Reynolds
It's
that time of year again; a time when memories of Tony Bennett
winning Album of the Year for an unplugged album,
Jethro Tull grabbing the award for Best Heavy Metal Performance
and Milli Vanilli receiving (and returning) their Best
New Artist mantelpieces give me a nasty case of diverticulitus.
Yup, it's Grammy time.
At this point I've sat through and
reported on too many of these shows to count, and have groaned
and guffawed at every misstep the show and the voters (a-k-a,
the Recording Academy) have made over the past two decades.
I'll admit that the past few years have been a bit more
bearable because of the mysterious blue-ribbon, double-secret
probation panel that makes the final choices in the top
four categories (Album of the Year, Record of
the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist)
after reviewing the top 20 vote getters in each. But just
like knowing that the new Kevin Costner film sucks, it's
relatively easy to predict what the academy old-timers will
vote for. So here are Wax Buildup's predictions for 10 major
categories. Make sure to come back the day after the Grammys
where we'll either gloat or be very gloomy about our psychic
abilities.

Alternative Music Album
Tori Amos - Strange Little
Girls
Bjork - Vespertine
Coldplay - Parachutes
Fatboy Slim - Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars
Radiohead - Amnesiac
Winner: Radiohead. Since Radiohead has been nominated
for Album of the Year twice before, there are the
only act any of the voters will recognize. |
 |
Hard Rock Performance
Alien Ant Farm-"Smooth Criminal"
Linkin Park-"Crawling"
P.O.D.-"Alive"
Rage Against the Machine-"Renegades of Funk"
Saliva-"Your Disease"
Winner: Linkin Park LP is also up for Best New
Artist, but they'll never win that, so here's their consolation
prize. |
 |
Rock Performance by a Duo or
Group With Vocal
Aerosmith - "Jaded"
Coldplay - "Yellow"
Dave Matthews Band - "The Space Between"
Train - "Drops of Jupiter"
U2 - "Elevation"
Winner: U2. Here's where the U2 juggernaut begins.
I mean, is that Train song really "rock?" |
 |
Male Rock Vocal Performance
Ryan Adams - "New York, New York"
Eric Clapton - "Superman Inside"
Bob Dylan - "Honest With Me"
Lenny Kravitz - "Dig In"
John Mellencamp - "Peaceful World"
Winner: Bob Dylan. Lots of Grammy favorites here
(Dylan, Kravitz and Clapton), but since Dylan will be
shut out in the Album of the Year category, here
is his consolation prize. |
 |
Pop Performance By a Duo or
Group With Vocal
Backstreet Boys - "Shape of My
Heart"
Five for Fighting - "Superman (It's Not Easy)"
NSync - "Gone"
R.E.M. - "Imitation of Life"
U2 - "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of"
Winner: U2. This one isn't even a contest. |
 |
Male Pop Vocal Performance
Craig David - "Fill Me In"
Michael Jackson - "You Rock My World"
Elton John - "I Want Love"
Brian McKnight - "Still"
James Taylor - "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight"
Winner: Elton John. Here's where I will pick an
upset-Michael Jackson means ratings, but I think Elton's
track sounds enough like one of those early hits to make
all these voters warm and fuzzy. |
 |
Female Pop Vocal Performance
Nelly Furtado - "I'm Like a Bird"
Faith Hill - "There You'll Be"
Janet Jackson - "Someone to Call My Lover"
Sade - "By Your Side"
Lucinda Williams - "Essence"
Winner: Nelly Furtado Canada's hottest export until
Nickelback came along won't have a shot at Best New
Artist either, so here's something to make sure she
won't go home empty handed. |
 |
Best New Artist
India.Arie
Nelly Furtado
David Gray
Alicia Keys
Linkin Park
Winner: Alicia Keys. India Arie is this year's Joan
Osborne - she's nominated a bunch of times, but she'll
be going home a big loser. Alicia Keys can start making
room on her shelf for a bunch of awards. |
 |
Song of the Year
"Drops of Jupiter" - Train
"Fallin'"- Alicia Keys
"I'm a Like a Bird" - Nelly Furtado
"Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" - U2
"Video" - India.Arie
Winner: "Fallin'." The U2 juggernaut will lose some
steam to the night's other big winner. |
 |
Record of the Year
"Video"-India.Arie
"Fallin'"-Alicia Keys
"Ms. Jackson"-Outkast
"Drops of Jupiter"-Train
"Walk On"-U2
Winner: Alicia Keys. This is the category that has
the touch of the blue-ribbon, man behind the curtain panel,
as most Grammy voters wouldn't know Outkast if the duo
played in their living room. |
 |
Album of the Year
India.Arie - Acoustic Soul
Bob Dylan - Love and Theft
O Brother, Where Art Thou Soundtrack
Outkast - Skankonia
U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind
Winner: U2. All the (well-deserved) exposure and
praise this band has gotten after 9/11 comes together
for the biggest award of the night. |
Come back after the show on Wednesday
and see how we did!
