Over the years, the influence of Big Star has continued to crop up in
record reviews, interviews, and even in such television dreck as "That 70s Show".
Unfortunately it is all for naught, as Chris Bell isn't likely to crawl out
of his grave and join the ever cranky and unpredictable Alex Chilton for
some high paid one-off gig. But fear not, Joe Pernice and crew are here and
very well might carry the power-pop torch to an all-time high.
This former Massachusetts, now Brooklyn-based ensemble was formerly known as
The Scud Mountain Boys, who released a few records with Sub Pop to some
critical acclaim. Fortunately for us all, they've dropped some of the
alt-country leanings that were very in vogue a number of years back, and have
fully adapted their sound towards the vocal stylings of ex-Zombie Colin
Blunstone, Byrdsian chiming 12-string guitars, The Raspberries, Bread (to a
certain extent) and of course Memphis' finest, Big Star. The arrangements
are nothing short of stunning with the at-times-Spectorian/Wilson stylings filling
every nook and cranny with the most opulent and sumptuous morsels of
music your ears can take.
Can The World Won't End possibly be one of the best albums recorded in recent memory? I
can guarantee it.
