The more you hear Citizen Cope the more you realize that it's a difficult album to categorize. Some signs point towards hip-hop (the beats, artwork), others towards a more traditional soul and funk sound (vocals, production) and still others show signs that this is a folk album (lyrics).
Citizen Cope is the debut solo album from Clarence Greenwood, former DJ for Basehead, and the lack of categorization is probably a good thing. It would be a shame for this disc to be excluded from any of the above mentioned genres - did we forget to mention pop?
The heavy sounds of acoustic guitars backed by thick drums and various keyboards serve as a solid and complimentary background to the focus element - Greenwood's vocals and lyrics, both of which command the listener's attention.
Citizen Cope shows is a strong talent and promises to deliver interesting material in the future, both as performer and producer.
