A true nugget for fans of surf music, or any guitar-driven instrumentals for that matter. Radio Waves is a collection of Aqua Velvets radio broadcasts made in northern California's Bay area during the 90's. While I usually consider "surf rock" bands to be something of a novelty, these guys do it right. They reach beyond the traditionally expected boundaries of the genre and show off the sheer power that can be conveyed by turning the twang and vibrato up and getting into a nice groove.
Also included is a 4-song bonus CD containing a live Aqua Velvets show recorded at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley, California in May of 2001. Clearly this is not a band that uses the studio to hide from anything...I'm guessing they've completed many-a-first-take sessions. Most amusing is the cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" that kicks of the bonus disc.
