The Rainbow Children

ARTIST: Prince (Google this artist)
ALBUM: The Rainbow Children
LABEL: NPG Music Club
RELEASED: 2001

With The Rainbow Children, Prince has given us an album whose roots sprout from a lifetime of disparate influences. It contains all the funk and grind Prince fans have come to expect, while departing from the sexually obsessed themes of his earlier work and drifting into a more cerebral, conceptual and even theological realm. The musical diversity is staggering. Each listen brings to mind another point of reference: the experimental funk of Miles Davis's early 70's work ("Rainbow Children"), the syncopated James Brown backbeat ("The Work pt. 1"), the musical exploration of Return To Forever ("Everywhere") and of course, the ever-present "classic" Prince sound, which is pretty much evident throughout. And what Prince set would be complete without one or two ballads? "She Loves Me 4 Me" and "Last December" fill the slot nicely. The only thing missing from The Rainbow Children is the pop-classic that often finds its way onto his albums..."Raspberry Beret", The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", etc. Although this hardly diminishes what is clearly one of the year's most accomplished and excellent releases.
