Coming Up! An Indie Tribute To Paul McCartney

ALBUM: Coming Up! An Indie Tribute To Paul McCartney
LABEL: Oglio Records
RELEASED: 2001

Coming Up!, the second in a two-disc series, pays tribute to the songwriting of Paul McCartney with independent artists recording new versions of his songs.

Listening to this album makes you wonder how difficult it is to go wrong with a Paul McCartney song. Oh sure, it can be done...but not here. Coming Up! brings together a disparate group of independent artists to interpret the songs of Sir Paul, and they do it with a fairly consistent level of success. While it's always fun to hear radically different versions of old favorites, there's nothing unpleasant about straight-forward covers from artists that clearly have an overwhelming passion for the original.

The disc opens with a rockin' yet melodic "Let 'Em In" by Starbelly. Other favorites include Mark Bacino, who gives the warm-acoustic-guitars-and-big-tom-toms treatment to his excellent version of "Every Night," and Kyf Brewer's faithful and inspired "Mull of Kintyre," which puts the song in a new and beautiful light.

Coming Up! is the kind of album that will have an ever-changing favorite cut for most listeners, but for now I'm going with The Masticators and their fantastic version of "With A Little Luck." While it's almost note-for-note true to the original, it sounds as fresh and youthful as it did on 45 in 1978.
