ALBUM: Good Rockin' Tonight (The Legacy of Sun Records)
LABEL: London Sire Records
RELEASED: 2001

Without question, Sun Records is one of the music world's most recognized labels. If founder Sam Phillips had stopped with Elvis Presley as his only success, he would have still secured his label's place in rock 'n' roll history. Fortunately, Sun was also the launch pad for the careers of Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash to name just a few. Good Rockin' Tonight - The Legacy of Sun Records is a companion CD to the PBS documentary, and a tribute to artists that made Sun Records a contender for the title, "birthplace of rock."

No stranger to the Sun era, Paul McCartney opens the album with "That's Alright," backed by original Elvis sidemen Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana (who also appear elsewhere on the CD). Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers version of "Blue Moon of Kentucky" shows off the band's versatility, sounding excellent and very non-Petty. Chris Isaak, on the other hand, weighs in with his patented melancholy, warbled-vocal sound on "It Wouldn't Be The Same Without You," and The Howling Diablos featuring Kid Rock will certainly help the Sun legacy reach a younger audience that might not be interested the barrage of classic rock artists presented here. Bob Dylan's "Red Cadillac and A Black Moustache" is a warm and welcome gem, as is the straight-forward "Just Walkin' In The Rain" by Eric Clapton & The Impressions.

Good Rockin' Tonight does a great job of paying tribute to this seminal label and its artists, and will find a place in the ongoing historical documentation of rock music.
