ARTIST: Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio (Google this artist)
ALBUM: Supernova
LABEL: Blue Note
RELEASED: 2001

With Carlos Henriquez on upright bass and Ignacio Berroa on drums, Gonzalo Rubalcaba's jazz trio offers a surprisingly minimalist Afro-Brazilian jazz record that retains a skeletal melodic frame held strong by Rubalcaba's nimble treble scale-work and facility with many cultural sensibilities. The original compositions stand equal with established tunes like "The Peanut Vendor" and "Alma Mia," which the trio interprets quite well. Yet with some phrasings too meagerly arranged and time signature changes halting rather than transitioning, its afterglow seems to fade, though it ends with hope ("Oren"). At 37 years of age the Havana-born pianist and composer, along with his trio, have a lively sun-washed beauty in the form of Supernova.
