The film Songcatcher chronicles
a fictional love story and gives a glimpse into the early
days of Appalachian folk music, which is an essential ingredient
in the development of American popular music. The accompanying
soundtrack, Music From and Inspired
by the Motion Picture, is an excellent introduction
to this American legacy, and a fine album in its own right.
An appropriate and stellar cast includes Rosanne Cash, Iris
Dement, Patty Loveless and Dolly Parton, who composed one
of the album's three new songs, the remainder being traditionals.
The songs on "Songcatcher"
give you a feel for the historical significance of the music,
both instrumentally and in its vocal techniques, while still
showing off the well-known styles of each performer. Among
the album's most effective and interesting tracks are Pat
Carroll's "Single Girl," Rosanne Cash's "Fair and Tender
Ladies" and Dolly Parton and Emmy Rossum's "When Love Is
New.
