The lead track on the Bridget
Jones's Diary Soundtrack is the keeper. Shelby
Lynne, who took eight years to collect her "best
new artist" nod from the Grammy folks, delivers "Killin
Kind," a hearty new song that fits in nicely with
her y'alternative-meets-pop style. The album that follows
is an interesting, if not terribly exciting, collection,
and a good introduction to an eclectic group of artists.
Standouts include newcomer Rosey,
who sounds like Fiona Apple with a bit more groove, on
"Love," and Robbie Williams, who seems right
at home with his brassy version of Sinatra's "Have
You Met Miss Jones?" Other notables include Dina
Carroll's cover of Van Morrison's "Someone Like You"
and Gabrielle's "Out of Reach."
Then there's country songwriter Jamie O'Neal's
perplexing rendition of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself."
While hers is an almost note for note copy of Celine Dion's
hideous version, it's hard to go very wrong with such
a great song.
The album also includes ex-Spice Girl Geri
Halliwell, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye, Sheryl Crow, Alisha's Attic
and Chaka Khan. Overall, a worthwhile listen.
