Live in New
York City is one of the greatest live albums ever.
Oh, wait, that what I would have written if it hadn't been
assembled so poorly. The first two-thirds of the album mirror
the HBO special of the same name. And that was all it was
going to be - 13 songs spread over two discs. Springsteen
fans voiced their displeasure (and rightly so) about how
much was left out. So seven more tracks were added, including
the gems "Lost in the Flood" (performed for the first time
in 22 years) and the radically rearranged "If I Should Fall
Behind." But the album is sequenced very poorly, placing
the controversial track "American Skin (41 Shots)" midway
through the second disc. When it was performed during Springsteen's
shows, it was played within the heart of the show, next
to the "The Promised Land" and the tale of industrial hardship
of "Youngstown," giving the song proper perspective. And
did we need to hear a 16-minute version of "Tenth Avenue
Freeze Out?" Live in New York City
is good, but it could have so much more.
