Shea Seger is an artist who has successfully
melded countless influences and techniques, and made an
album that does not rely overtly on any of them. A Texas
native who spent time in England, Seger seems to have
encountered a range of experiences that stretch beyond
both locales. On The May Street
Project, her second album, the songs go from semi-gritty,
Fiona Apple-like torch songs ("Last Time") to pretty,
acoustic-driven songs backed by African themes ("Shatterwall").
One of the most interesting aspects of the album is the
production and pattern of the rhtyhm tracks, which often
take the lead by viture of their sparse sound and basic
but driving beats. British critic's
darling Ron Sexsmith teams up with Shea on the ballad,
"Always.
