Learning about and listening to Nathan
Larson, it's hard not to think of Danny Elfman. Both played
in offbeat, creative and experimental bands (Elfman in Oingo
Boingo and Larson, Shudder To Think), and eventually branched
out to score films. Larson clearly has no intention of leaving
behind his pop-affections. His solo debut, Jealous
God, is a thoughtful collection of catchy songs.
The album was produced by Elvis Costello alumni, Clive Langer
and Alan Winstanley, and they've left their calling card
in the form of the album's title track, which sounds like
Larson's best Elvis impersonation. Most notable is "Just
Because A Man Expects Me To," which features Nina Persson
of the Cardigans, sounding exceptionally non-Cardigan-ish
on the album's strongest song.
