RELEASED: 2001

This is the sound of muted melancholy. This is the voice of reason in these days of mediocrity. And while Mark Kozelek, lead singer/songwriter/guitarist in Red House Painters, recorded this disc some three years ago, it is still the intoxicatingly potent sound that many cannot refuse to drink. Nothing here is remarkable, nothing here is breathtaking, yet nothing here is boring or redolent like most things floating along the pop music landscape. Here are ten timeless songs that pull at the fringes of your mind, tempt your psyche and massage your ears. Songs like "River" and "Cruiser" border on the slo-core, ambient vibe but exist outside of rock and roll conventions. Having starred in Almost Famous (the bass player in Sweetwater), released two solo records of remarkable AC/DC covers, and spearheading a John Denver tribute effort, this is a welcome return from a remarkable aural wordsmith.
