Ever the chameleon, Joe returns to
pop with Night and Day II. While not conceived
or written as a follow-up to his 1982 classic, it's easy
to see how the sounds, themes and even the players made
it the perfect continuation.
Night and Day II is a portrait
of New York City complete with local landmarks, lost souls
and observations. "Love Got Lost" features Marianne Faithfull
and tells the story of a Wall Street type, lost somewhere
between a world of Monday mornings and mergers, and a
desire to find love and companionship. You're tempted
to feel sorry as he (or perhaps she) sits alone at the
opera, wallowing in the loneliness that comes from a world
where the capacity to love often gets buried under other
aspirations. "Stranger Than You" takes you on a late-night
stroll through the streets of the city, where it couldn't
be more true - "there's always somebody stranger than
you."
The band and guests on Night and
Day II include Graham Maby and Sue Hadjopoulos (both
appeared on Night and Day), drummer Gary Burke
and the string quartet, Ethel. Joe has always made albums
that follow his musical impulses, and he has once again
successfully drawn on his considerable knowledge and expertise
in a wide variety of genres.
