Jesse Harris and the Ferdinandos are
one of those bands that can sound loose without being
sloppy. Their sound is that of a band whose members are
accomplished, in touch, or just plain comfortable enough
to make the final output sound charmingly underproduced,
warm and sincere.
The songs are melodic and have a back-porch,
summer day feel to them. "Waiting For Something" is a
good example and a standout on the disc. It starts with
a solid drum beat that manages to be driving and laid
back at the same time, is reinforced with a wandering
bass line, and colored with a melodic vocal...you find
yourself wishing it had just one more verse.
As co-leader of the band Once Blue
(check out their excellent 1995 out-of-print, self-titled
album), Harris has a track record of releasing melodic,
down to earth music, and The Ferdinandos (Kenny Wollesen,
Jesse Murphy and Tony Scherr) share credits ranging from
Bill Frisell to Tom Waits to Sex Mob. On Jesse Harris
and The Ferdinandos, they come together for an exceptionally
strong debut.
