Enveloping the moods and styles of Nick
Cave and Elvis Costello's Imperial
Bedroom (or Almost Blue), Cousteau
is a marvelous and melodic venture. This self-titled release
is stunning, certainly as a debut, and seems to flow from
these four young internationals (hailing from Beirut, Ireland,
London) with a hipster's effortlessness. The music is dark
but somehow elating, the lyrics poetic and cryptic, both
managing to successfully pull you into the feel of each
song. As the album moves on a dud or two appears, though
on the whole this is a significantly better-than-average
debut album. And don't miss the chance to see them live.
