With their fourth release Coldplay
asserts itself into a fine lineage of European bands that
includes Trashcan Sinatras, Catherine Wheel, My Bloody
Valentine, Oasis and most recently, Travis. While Parachutes
(their first full-length) isn't necessarily groundbreaking,
neither were the artists mentioned above, for the most
part. All made (or continue to make) music based on solid
songs, passionate vocals and convincing style.
Coldplay goes from the weary, hazy
sounds of early Radiohead (the measuring stick of a generation)
on "Spies" and "Sparks," to the aggressive assault of
"Shiver," and the swirling, dreamy and ominous "Trouble."
Parachutes is a promising
album of great pop songs.
