Behind the Blue

ARTIST: Bob & Wendy (Google this artist)
ALBUM: Behind the Blue
LABEL: none
RELEASED: 2001

Bob & Wendy Liepman are a great example of where music is going in this age of giant record companies, multi-million dollar contracts and the expectation that artists must sell 100,000 albums just to break even. Let's look at the evidence. First, they put out their own records. Second, they seem to have the support of their musical friends including Jude Johnstone, who sings on Behind the Blue. And most importantly, they make the music that comes truest to them. After growing up on the early folk of The Weavers, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez, Wendy writes songs that are deceptively simple and melodic. The arrangements hover between today's y'alternative and the classic country of days gone by, featuring acoustic guitars, cello, harmonica and mandocello. While it's not likely that Bob & Wendy will sell 100,000 copies of Behind the Blue, something tells me they're doing things just the way they want to.
