The Avalanches is a group of friends from Australia who apparently never learned that there are
certain rules and formulas to be followed when making an album. For example, the ever-popular, "take one lead singer with haunting good looks, add British accent, brooding intensity and dull songs, date hot-girl rock star, sell millions of records" method. While that seemed to work for Bush, The Avalanches have thankfully side-stepped this sort of formulaic evolution and come up with the eclectic and interesting Since I Left You. Each track blends into the next, creating an LP-party atmosphere with a wildly diverse range of samples (most of which are listed in the album notes). While the overall sound is reminiscent of Saint Etienne, the sense of humor, quirkiness and sheer oddity of this album leans more towards Kid Koala's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Since I Left You is more like the soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist. Its many turns, twists and sub-plots weave in and out and up and down with funny sounds, LP scratches, dialog and more, making for a cohesive and engaging whole.
