Flickering Flame: The Solo Years Volume 1

ARTIST: Roger Waters (Google this artist)
ALBUM: Flickering Flame: The Solo Years Volume 1
LABEL: Columbia Records
RELEASED: 2002

In recent years, Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters has eclipsed his former bandmates when it's come to touring and recording. Waters has been on the road since 1999 and recently released a live document (In the Flesh) of his 1999/2000 North American shows.

To capitalize on the current leg of his tour, Columbia Records has released Flickering Flame: The Solo Years Volume 1." The compilation borrows material from three of Waters' solo albums - Radio KAOS, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking, and Amused to Death) - and includes a handful of soundtrack cuts and other rarities. Like the 2002 tour, it will only be available in America as a pricey import.

There are only two new numbers on the album: Waters' straightforward cover of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and a demo of a new song, "Flickering Flame." The liner notes are sparse and offer no explanation of the long-rumored Dylan cover, and little more is known of the title track. Waters debuted the song early during his 2002 tour. That the song is labeled a "demo" suggests we'll see an alternate recording of the piece on a future album. (Waters is said to be working on a studio record of new material to be released this year or next.) Either way, with guitar by Doyle Bramhall II and keyboards by Jon Carin, the song sounds too polished to be called a demo.

Also of note are "Towers of Faith," originally from the 1986 soundtrack to the film "When the Wind Blows" (now long out of print), a demo of "Lost Boys Calling" from the 1999 soundtrack to "The Legend of 1900," and "Each Small Candle," the same live version that debuted on In the Flesh.
