Two Rainy Nights was recorded in the Pacific Northwest in April of 2001 and features some of Joe's long-timers, including Graham Maby and Sue Hadjopolous. The disc includes a variety of songs ranging from "Is She Really Going Out With Him" (1979) to "Happyland" (2000), representing a strong and varied sampling of his work through the years. As with his album, Live 1980/86, the arrangements are fresh and sometimes distinctly different from the original. "Hometown," from the Big World album was always a simple, upbeat and pretty pop song based on Pachelbel's Canon, but here it's played as a piano ballad. The new version brings out a new heart in the song and puts it alongside another of Joe's classics ballads, "Real Men" (which also appears on the disc).
Another highlight is "Happyland," from Night and Day II, where Joe sings, "Bailamos," and seems to explain the tragedy with only his inflection. The mood of this song is one of the best examples of Joe's skill as a songwriter.
Two Rainy Nights is available only through Joe's web site and from Great Big Island.
